This is Where I Live

As of this week I am a resident of Gang Elang 30 in Batubulan, on the outskirts of Denpasar, the largest city on the Indonesian island of Bali. I have a single room that sits above an open-air rehearsal space filled with various instruments. A gentle breeze blows in my balcony door for most of the day (apparently this is kite flying season).

This is my room

This is where music groups practice directly beneath my room

This is my street. It looks like there has been a lot of development here in the last few years but there are still a few rice paddies left in the neighborhood.

My comfort zone right now extends from my bed to the edges of the walled family compound and then down to the end of my street. At the warung (food stall) there, I at least know the names of the foods they serve and how much it costs. Beyond that is all mystery: unknown roads going to unknown places where some stranger is trying to sell me a lift on his motorbike (“transport!?”). Bit by bit I am learning to feel my way around. All for now.

Autumn in New England

I wrote this song last week while walking in the woods. I imagined a scene in a musical when a character takes to the streets to ponder his situation in song. One of those. I am afraid my own autumn in New England has been cut short, as I am posting this from the Hong Kong Airport. Now that I am on the move I plan to post more: music, videos, field recordings, pictures, writing etc. Enjoy.
